National Liberation Day of Korea (광복절)
The National Liberation Day of Korea is a public holiday celebrated annually on 15 August in both South and North Korea. It commemorates the day when Korea was liberated from 35 years of Japanese colonial rule by the Allies in 1945. The day also coincides with the anniversary of the founding of South Korea in 1945.
In South Korea, it is known as Gwangbokjeol (Korean: 광복절; lit. The Day the Light Returned). The name Gwangbokjeol uses the term “restoration” (복; bog) instead of “independence” (독립; dongnip) to emphasize that Korea had been independent for years prior to Japanese rule.

Mr. Kim works hard to support his wife and children with his Toronto convenience store. As he evaluates his future, he faces both a changing neighborhood landscape and the gap between his values and those of his Canada-born children. Playwright Ins Choi, who will also star in the production as the title character, calls Kim’s Convenience his “love letter to his parents and to all first-generation immigrants who call Canada their home.”
Kim’s Convenience will be performed at the ACT-SF Toni Rembe Theater from September 18 to October 19, 2025.

GYOPO Diasporic Refractions: Pre-Concert Performances
The GYOPO Diasporic Refractions: Pre-Concert Performances offers an immersive experience where honoring historical resilience manifests new possibilities for collective agency and dissent. Diasporic Korean artists and performers Ari Osterweis, Sharon Chohi Kim, Hwa Records, and Young Sun Han ignite resistance from the spaces between memory and manifestation, navigating the nuanced terrains of cultural memory, generational healing, and community building. Through movement, sound, and bodily presence, diasporic identity is performed as a site of struggle and liberation—a living archive that refracts through embodied practice. This afternoon of performance invites audiences to witness how the active transformation of cultural memory through artistic interventions results in a return to deeply ancient ritual, one that demands collective imagining and building of liberatory futures. This afternoon of performance is part of GYOPO Diasporic Refractions, which explores Korean diasporic experience through various interdisciplinary arts.
LA Phil Insight is generously supported by Linda and David Shaheen.

GYOPO Diasporic Refractions: Symposium
Co-curated by musician and artist SASAMI, GYOPO Diasporic Refractions: Symposium brings into conversation musicians, scholars, and performers who draw upon their chosen crafts and Korean heritage to examine, deconstruct, and alter systems of oppression. To reinvent, survive, and resist has been an intrinsic part of the Korean experience. Artist presentations and a round table discussion will engage different perspectives on being part of the Korean diaspora—of sitting on the fault-line of eastern and western history and consciousness while deeply entrenched in the rituals, principles, and histories of violence in both the eastern and western worlds. This symposium is part of GYOPO Diasporic Refractions, which explores Korean diasporic experience through various interdisciplinary arts.
LA Phil Insight is generously supported by Linda and David Shaheen.

Throughout the day, students will participate in interactive workshops, discussions, and networking opportunities with their peers. The Teen Summit offers a space for youth to gain a deeper connection to their community, explore how culture and social justice intersect, and develop the leadership skills necessary to make a positive impact.

NAMIWalks San Francisco
“No one NAMIWalks alone,” that’s the mantra we walk by at the community’s most important mental health fundraising event. Some people walk together, in step and arm in arm. Others walk together in spirit. Still others, sadly, walk together in memory. However, we raise money that connects those in need to the life-changing, even life-saving, mental health programs and guidance that NAMI offers.

Voices of Silicon Valley in Concert
Voices of Silicon Valley will perform excerpts from “Bits torn from words” by composer Peter Shin, as well as highlights from their repertoire.
“Bits torn from words” examines the mental health condition of generalized anxiety disorder — how the dread of even the most inconsequential circumstances feels gargantuanly out of proportion to its relative impact. In expanded song form, wavering pitches, surrendered exclamations, and quivering breaths convey anxiety’s vivid manifestations in the body and psyche.

Growing up in America Contest
Hosted by AACI and in partnership with NBC Bay Area, Growing Up in America (GUA) is an annual art, essay and video contest that engages hundreds of Bay Area students from kindergarten through 12th grade.
Founded over 25 years ago by Lance Lew of NBC Bay Area, GUA offers a unique platform for young people to creatively explore and celebrate their cultural identity through the lens of civic engagement. TEN student winners are selected for a cash award and a chance to appear on NBC Bay Area!
As AACI celebrated its 50th anniversary last year, we were excited to announce changes to the contest. Just as AACI’s primary focus has evolved from serving only the Asian community to supporting individuals of all ethnic backgrounds, we are now encouraging participation from students of ALL ethnicities. To reflect this inclusivity, the contest has been renamed from Growing Up Asian in America to simply Growing Up in America (GUA). The contest still aims to spark creative exploration of the student’s cultural identity.
The next Growing Up in America contest will officially launch in February 2025. Learn more about the contest below and spread the word to Bay Area students! Visit https://aaci.org/gua/. For questions, please contact AACI at (408) 975-2075 or e-mail gua@aaci.org
