We Stand in Solidarity

Our hearts are heavy from the senseless violence and long-standing injustices suffered by the Black community. George Floyd’s untimely death at the hands of law enforcement is just the latest in an all too familiar pattern of systemic violence that devalues Black lives and perpetuates a cycle of injustice. We grieve for them, with their families and communities. And we cannot stay silent.

All of us at the Korean American Community Foundation in New York and San Francisco stand in solidarity with the Black community. We join hands in calling for change and the need to tackle inequities at the root of current systems. As a community foundation dedicated to building philanthropy to help lift up struggling immigrants, we are well aware of the challenges that people of color face in this country, historically and in current times. We are also aware that the magnitude of these challenges is profoundly different for our Black neighbors. We acknowledge that as a community and personally, we have work to do to confront our own biases, privileges, and complicity in institutional racism, to not be a bystander but to speak up against injustice, engage in peaceful protest and reflect on what it means to be in community with our neighbors. We also commend those who are working to build anti-racism and allyship within our communities.

Here are some actions we can take immediately:
  • Actively listen and learn about racial inequities. Here is a reading list recommended by Ibram X. Kendi, Historian and Author of How to Be an Antiracist and Stamped from the Beginning: The Definitive History of Racist Ideas in America.
  • Vote and raise your voice in confronting racism and calling for accountability and policing changes, as well as justice for George Floyd. Join local efforts to reform systems.
  • Donate to social justice organizations that are fighting against racial inequities, including Black Lives Matter and NAACP
