Rising Stars

New organizations emerged in response to COVID-19, 2020’s racial reckoning, and to meet the rising needs and service gaps in communities. Many of these organizations are led by BIPOC leaders, have small budgets, small teams, and are often fiscally sponsored. What do these emerging organizations need for long term sustainability? How can funders support these organizations?

Philanthropy often sides with organizations with experience and longevity, how can philanthropy reframe its commitment to include emerging organizations leading the way? Hear from the Korean American Community Foundation of San Francisco, James B. McClatchy Foundation, and the Race, Gender and Human Rights Fund about their work investing in emerging organizations. We will also be joined by Ucedrah Osby, Executive Director of Community Interventions, who will share the needs, challenges and opportunities to support the organizational resilience of small emerging organizations.

Join us to

  • Discuss the unique needs of these organizations and their leaders

  • Learn how funders are supporting and funding emerging organizations

NAMI Santa Clara county

Always With Us: Asian Americans Rise Against Hate

March 16th, 2021 was a harrowing day for Asian Americans, marked by the killing of eight people, six of whom were Asian women. This tragedy brought the rising anti-Asian hate to the forefront of public attention, and for the first time, many Asian Americans took to the streets to protest and demand change.

Amidst ongoing violence against the Asian community including, the tragic deaths of Michelle Go, Christina Lee, and GuiYin Ma in 2022, as well as the recent Monterey Park and Half Moon Bay shootings, community organizers nationwide are coming together on the second anniversary of the Atlanta killings. Together we’ll honor the lives lost, acknowledge the resilience demonstrated, and recognize the invaluable contributions of Asian workers, ranging from spa employees in Atlanta to farm laborers in Half Moon Bay, who are all too often overlooked.

GYOPO x Ssi Ya Gi: Conversation, Story Share and Reception

Celebrate Community, Food, Elders, and Storytelling on the anniversary of the start of the Korean War

Join us to participate in an intergenerational project that centers community empowerment and cultural memory. This day holds special meaning for Koreans in the diaspora because it marks the 72nd anniversary of the Korean War, a still unended conflict that continues to reverberate in and beyond the Peninsula. Food – specific dishes, as well as particular plants and seeds – embodies rich stories of how elders survived the armed conflict and its aftermath, and the memories they hope to share with younger generations. This event includes a panel discussion, reception and the opportunity to share your own food memories.
